Taranatha’s Songs of Realization

Over the past year, Dzokden has shared an expanding collection of sacred music in English, Tibetan, Chinese, Hungarian, and other languages. While this may seem like a modern expression of the Dharma, it follows a tradition that stretches back through the great Buddhist masters themselves.

For centuries, realized masters composed songs of realization (mgur) and dohā to communicate the living experience of the path. Alongside philosophical treatises and meditation manuals, these poetic teachings distilled profound realization into verses that could be contemplated, remembered, sung, and passed from teacher to disciple. Their songs reveal not only what the masters taught, but what they directly realized.

As we introduce Sights and Sounds of Shambhala—a new initiative bringing together sacred music and Buddhist art—we are honored to celebrate the Parinirvāṇa of Jetsun Tāranātha, one of the most prolific scholars, yogis, and accomplished meditation masters in Tibetan Buddhist history.

To commemorate this occasion, Khentrul Rinpoche will offer a teaching and commentary on one of Tāranātha’s songs of realization from his collected works. Through this profound vajra song, we will explore the essential heart of the path—bringing together view, meditation, and conduct as a direct guide to realization.

Join us in honoring the extraordinary legacy of Jetsun Tāranātha through the timeless tradition of songs of realization, where the awakened experience of the masters continues to inspire practitioners across generations.
