Description
We are seeking a dedicated volunteer to fill the critical role of Linux & Cloud Services Engineer. The Volunteer will be responsible for the stable, high-performing, and secure operation of our Linux server infrastructure and cloud services. This role is focused on server-side administration and maintenance and will work closely with the development team, but will not perform core development functions. Dzokden leverages this technology to support Rinpoche’s core mission including public-facing multilingual websites, learning portals and social media platforms. These services are cloud-based using a mix of open source, commercial products, and integrations.
Responsibilities
- Manage and administer all AWS based Linux server infrastructure remotely via SSH, ensuring high availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems.
- Perform system monitoring, patching, configuration management, and security hardening of Linux environments.
- Administer and maintain the cPanel/WHM environment, including user account management.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex problems across development and production environments.
- Collaborate with the web development team and other volunteers to ensure new and existing environments meet technical requirements and to troubleshoot production issues.
- Work with senior architects to define and implement the technical roadmap for infrastructure.
- Maintain outstanding operations documentation on systems, applications, and environments.
- Manage deployment and monitoring processes for infrastructure services.
- Investigate resources usage issues to determine root cause, evaluating valid adjustment needed or if sites need optimized with ability to demonstrate this conclusively.
- Attend online development team meetings, use task management tools, and participate with others regularly.
Skills & Qualifications
Technology
- Minimum 5 years experience in Linux server administration and engineering. Fluent in Linux command line environments and performing server management via SSH and via WHM. Knowledge of whmapi is a plus.
- Demonstrated knowledge of web security topics (e.g., common vulnerabilities, attack vectors, best practices). Experience with Apache/Nginx administration, including modules and security configuration. Experience with Mariadb/mysql administration and maintenance. Ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure problems without the ability to escalate.
- Experience supporting WHM/Cpanel users/resellers. Familiarity with CloudLinux Lightweight Virtual Environments (LVE) a plus. Experience managing AWS resources with command line and web tools. Experience with Cloudflare setup, configuration, and monitoring.
- Proficiency with server performance metrics, analysis, and optimization tools. Web site performance metrics and analysis, CDN setup and monitoring. Fluent in command line performance analysis tools (sar, a/top, fio, netstat, lvestats, etc.) Knowledge of mod_sec and Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules, and ability to troubleshoot and modify appropriately.
- Network layers, diagnostic tools (tcpdump, wireshark) and troubleshooting. Familiarity with cgroups and use for resource management. Use of Ansible or similar configuration management tools.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks. Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; diligence; able to work through obstacles and challenges. Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaborate with the review team, staff members and/or volunteers to fully support the project.
- Ability to use Google Workspace, Drive, Docs (text editing/formatting functions) and Slack. Able to transfer knowledge to future volunteers.
