About this Program

Over 1,000 years ago, Kalachakra astrology was integrated into Tibetan astrology, forming one of its most profound and sophisticated foundations. However, over time, much of its depth has not been fully utilized. Today, its most advanced applications are preserved and practiced only occasionally by great mahasiddhas and highly accomplished practitioners, particularly within the Jonang lineage. Yet within this system lie extraordinarily powerful methods—methods capable of making precise predictions and, more importantly, optimizing advanced yogic practices by harmonizing the practitioner with the elements, cycles of time, and subtle energies of the body. At Dzokden, we are committed to ensuring that this precious knowledge is both preserved and allowed to flourish. Our aspiration is to make these teachings more accessible to sincere practitioners, while maintaining their integrity and depth. Our astrology program is designed to provide foundational education so that students can begin to understand the profound relationships within Kalachakra between cosmology, the subtle body, karma, and our enlightened nature. Through this understanding, astrology becomes not merely predictive, but a skillful means on the path to enlightenment.

Lineage Partnerships

To ensure authenticity, depth, and integrity, we are collaborating with respected lineage holders and institutions that preserve different dimensions of the Kalachakra tradition. Each brings a unique strength, and together they form a more complete picture of this profound science. By bringing together these two streams of knowledge, our program seeks to unite the precision and clarity of the outer system, and the experiential depth of the inner yogic path. In this way, Kalachakra astrology can be restored as a complete science—one that supports both understanding and realization.

Men-Tsee-Khang (Gelug Tradition)
Men-Tsee-Khang is one of the most authoritative institutions for Tibetan astrology, preserving a highly refined and systematic presentation of the tradition within the Gelug lineage. Their approach offers exceptional clarity in the outer Kalachakra system—including cosmology, time cycles, elemental relationships, and precise astrological calculations. Through their training, students gain a strong and reliable foundation in how the universe is structured according to Kalachakra, and how time and elements interact within that system. They also maintain a living connection to the Kalachakra empowerment and its textual tradition, allowing for a deep theoretical understanding of the relationship between external cosmology, the internal subtle body, and the path to enlightenment. With experienced teachers who are fluent in English, Men-Tsee-Khang plays a vital role in making this knowledge accessible, structured, and grounded for modern practitioners.

Jonang Lineage Astrologer
To complement this strong outer foundation, we are working with an ordained monk and astrologer from the Jonang lineage. The Jonang tradition uniquely preserves Kalachakra as a complete and fully integrated path, including its living transmission of the completion stage practices—especially the Six Vajra Yogas. Within this lineage, the relationship between astrology, the subtle body, and realization is not only studied but directly experienced through meditative practice. This means that Kalachakra astrology is understood not just as a system of calculation, but as a dynamic and experiential science—one that reveals how external time cycles, internal energies, and stages of awakening are deeply interconnected.

Such insight can only arise from a practitioner who has both:

• trained in the astrological system, and
• cultivated direct practice and best realization through the Vajra Yogas.

Through this collaboration, we aim to offer teachings that illuminate the profound inner dimension of Kalachakra astrology—bridging outer cosmology with inner yogic experience in a way that remains rare and precious in today’s world.

Dzokden Multidisciplinary Astrology Modules
In addition to our lineage-based training, we also offer a multidisciplinary approach to astrology. Students will be introduced to major astrological traditions—including Tibetan, Vedic (Jyotish), Western astrology, and, in time, Chinese systems—to better understand both their shared principles and key differences. By exploring these systems side by side, practitioners can:

These modules are developed collaboratively by Dzokden students and practitioners from diverse astrological backgrounds, creating a rich, integrative learning environment grounded in both study and lived experience.

Beyond these primary partnerships, we recognize that Kalachakra astrology exists in various forms across different lineages, and that other spiritual traditions preserve related astrological sciences. As we establish a strong foundation, we aspire to explore potential connections with systems such as Jyotish and other traditions. This exploration will be undertaken with care and respect, ensuring that any comparative understanding remains grounded in authentic knowledge and realization.

For centuries, Kalachakra astrology has been most often used primarily for the creation of calendars and annual almanacs. Dzokden seeks to restore it as a living, dynamic system—one that directly supports spiritual realization. To bring this vision to life, Dzokden is developing a holistic mandala of resources and transmissions:

These methods are traditionally practiced by advanced yogis who have stabilized their awareness through deep engagement with the Kalachakra path and the Six Vajra Yogas. For this reason, our program emphasizes a gradual path: beginning with accessible knowledge and skillful application, while honoring that deeper realization arises through dedicated practice.
