- ༄༅། །བོད་མི་མང་གིས་སྐྱིད་སྡུག་ཅི་བྱུང་ལ་རེ་ལྟོས་བྱ་ཡུལ་སྐབས་བཅུ་བདུན་པའི་བོད་མི་མང་སྤྱི་འཐུས་ཡོངས་དང་། ལྷག་པར་དུ་ད་ལྟའི་བཅའ་ཁྲིམས་བསྐྱར་བཅོས་ཚོགས་ཆུང་ལ་ཆེད་ཞུ།
For the welfare and spiritual benefit of the Tibetan (and non-Tibetan) people. I am writing to strongly urge the members of the Tibetan Parliament to officially recognize the Jonang lineage as a formal religious organization within Tibetan Buddhism. I request that Parliament amend its charter and include Jonang as an official sect giving them equal weight alongside the Gelug, Kagyu, Nyingma, Sakya and Bon.
The Jonang lineage has been vital to Tibetan Buddhism since the early 13th century. It is the only lineage that contains the entire Kalachakra tantra stages and it cannot be denied that Jonang has contributed significantly to the philosophical, spiritual, and cultural heritage of the Tibetan people.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of formal recognition of Jonang by the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Jonang is not mentioned or promoted in school curriculums, spiritual communities or public forums. As a result, the massive collection of teachings, scholarship and practices stand in real danger of being lost forever.
As an engaged supporter and advocate of religious diversity, I urge Parliament to take action to change its position and amend its charter immediately. This recognition is not merely a domestic issue. It has garnered significant interest from scholars, practitioners and advocates worldwide. The lack of official recognition and equal rights within Tibetan Buddhism has created unnecessary confusion and uncertainty in the Tibetan Parliament in Exile’s commitment to religious diversity and inclusion.
Official recognition of Jonang will allow Parliament to clear any doubt of its commitment to the preservation of all authentic Tibetan Buddhist lineages. Therefore, this is an URGENT plea that the Tibetan Parliament in Exile officially and formally vote to amend its charter recognizing Jonang, fixing this deeply significant omission an action that has been long since overdue. As the members of Parliament is fully aware, several governments and Buddhist organizations in Tibet have already recognized Jonang officially.
By formally amending this charter, Parliament can secure its position as a champion of equality, justice together with spiritual and cultural diversity. The entire global community awaits your decisive action in fixing this long-standing disparity.

བརྒྱད། ཐ་ན་རྒྱུན་དུ་སྐྱོན་བརྗོད་བྱ་ཡུལ་གྱི་རྒྱ་ནག་གཞུང་གིས་ཆོས་བརྒྱུད་ཀུན་ལ་འདྲ་མཉམ་དུ་སྤྲད་ཡོད་པ་ཙམ་ཡང་མ་སྤྲད་པར་སྣང་བས་ན། བློ་དང་ལྡན་པ་སུ་གང་གིས་ཀྱང་བསམ་ཡུལ་ལས་འདས་པས། དེ་ལ་ཡག་པའི་འགྲེལ་བཤད་གང་ཡང་གནང་ཚུལ་གཏན་ནས་མེད་པ།
དགུ བོད་མའི་སྒྲིག་འཛུགས་ལ་རྒྱབ་སྐྱོར་གནང་མཁན་གྱི་རྒྱལ་ཁབ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་བློ་ཡུལ་དུ་མི་ཤོང་བར་གྱུར་ངེས་པས། ཁོང་ཚོས་བརྩི་བཀུར་དང་གདེང་འཇོག་བརླག་ནས་རྒྱབ་སྐྱོར་འཚམས་འཇོག་བྱེད་ཉེན་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཆེ་བ།
བཅུ། མ་ཟད་ཇོ་ནང་བ་ཡོངས་དང་གཞན་བློ་ལྡན་གྱི་བོད་མི་མང་བོས་རང་གཞུང་ལ་ཁོ་ཐག་ཆད་ནས་ཆེ་མཐོང་བརླག་ན། དམངས་མེད་དོན་མེད་ཀྱི་སྒྲིག་འཛུགས་ཤིག་ཏུ་འགྱུར་སྲིད་པས། དེ་ལ་སོགས་པ་ལ་བློ་དང་ལྡན་པ་ཀུན་གྱིས་བསམ་གཞིགས་ནན་མོ་གཏོང་བར་ཅི་ནས་ཀྱང་རེ་བ་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཆེ་ཞུ།

བོད་རྒྱལ་ལོ་༢༡༥༠ལོའི་བོད་ཟླ་༦ པའི་ཚེས་༧ ལ་འཛམ་གླིང་དཔལ་རྒྱལ་སྤྱིའི་རྫོགས་ལྡན་གསར་བ་བསུ་བའི་ལྷན་ཚོགས་ནས། ཕུལ།། །།
Importance of the Jonang Tradition
The Jonang Tradition contains some of the most diverse and profound teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, including the Dzokden dharma of Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen. The Jonang tradition has been vital to Tibetan Buddhism since the early 13th century. It is the only lineage that contains the entire Kalachakra Completion Stage practices and it cannot be denied that Jonang has contributed significantly to the philosophical, spiritual, and cultural heritage of the Tibetan people. The Kalachakra Tantra is prophesized to directly bring a golden age of world peace and harmony into our world. Therefore, while the tradition is deeply important to Tibetan Buddhism, it is even more important for the future of humanity.
Why This Has Yet to Be Accomplished
The Jonang tradition has never in the history of Tibet been involved in politics. When many Tibetan people followed His Holiness the Dalai Lama out of Tibet, a large number came from the Wustang regions that did not have many Jonangpas. The yogis and monks of the Jonang lineage, largely living in Amdo did not leave Tibet and instead stayed focused on realizing the yogas, teachings and practices. To this day the majority of the Jonang still live and are practicing in what is now modern day China in their homes, caves, tents and monasteries.
Many of the original exile CTA politicians came from regions without the Jonang tradition and were ignorant of its existence. It was not listed as one of the Tibetan traditions from the start.
Around the 1990s the Jonang in Exile sent 1000s of letters to the CTA and at times were nearly given representation. Although coming close, they never achieved the 2/3 majority support from the officials for the recognition to pass. This was in part due to a power struggle over how rights were distributed to regions related to religious traditions and not as strongly related to religion itself. But this doesn’t mean that it is right to ignore religious equality in favor of regional struggles. It is time for the CTA to recognize the Jonang tradition so that equal effort is put into raising awareness of its existence and preservation globally.
Why This Is Important To Change
The recognition and representation of the Jonang traditions affects many things including:
- School books for the CTA currently only teach about 5 tibetan traditions. Tibetans in exile and Western people following what is officially listed fail to learn of the Jonang tradition.
- Recognizing the Jonang tradition would help save the heritage of the Golden Age teachings of Shambhala and Kalachakra as more people would become aware of the traditions existence
- It would be in alignment with His Holiness the Dalia Lama who recognizes the Jonang is a distinct tradition and should be equal alongside all the other Tibetan Dharma traditions.
- Updated Dharma histories of Tibet would be known in the world that would properly align with history.
- Recognizing all the major traditions promotes a Rimé view free of bias and promotes inclusivity.
