Tantric Purification Workshop on Fire Pujas

This is an incredible opportunity to learn how to practice pujas to generate vast amounts of merit and purification. In Vajrayana there are many types of burnt offering pujas that utilize fire. They can be sorted into 3 main categories, Sur (smell offering), Sang Chö (smoke offering) and Jinsek (fire offering). All of these practices have incredibly profound meaning at their core which creates the conditions for the accumulation of both merit and wisdom simultaneously. While each practice invites the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, dharma protectors, local deities, beings of the 6 realms amongst all others to the practice, they have different focuses for the karma they are working with.

Khentrul Rinpoche has kindly agreed to teach us about these three types of fire offerings. He has composed and arranged compositions of these pujas that a student can do in a less complicated form at home after this workshop.

The 3 Offering Practices

Sur Dotgu Kuntsol – The Gift of All Needs
The Sur is a smell offering that uses fire to burn a collection of offerings to create a sent offering. The main focus is all the bardo beings, hungry ghosts, whoever has incredible suffering, and whomever we have a karmic debt to. This is commonly used as an offering to purify our own and our ancestor’s karmic debt for the benefit of all sentient beings.
Sang Chodtrun Gyatso – The Ocean of Offerings
While this one invites all the buddha, bodhisattvas and deities the main emphasis is on the local deities and dharma protectors. The sang chö (smoke) offering helps to clear karmic obstacles in our samsaric life in to have a precious human birth to practice dharma.
Jinsek Dropan Gyatso – The Ocean of Benefits
There are many types of Jinsek but they all focus on purification. There is extensive offering with many different substances made into the fire that is each linked to creating different beneficial results. This creates the condition to purify anybody’s negative karma and their body.

100 Million Merit-Multiplying Day
These meritorious offering pujas and teachings fall on Lhabab Duchen, the auspicious day when Buddha Shakyamuni descended to Earth from the God Realm of the Thirty-Three after teaching Dharma to the gods, and his mother, Mayadevi. As a merit multiplying day, the karmic results of actions done on this day are multiplied 100 million times for the benefit of all sentient beings. Since all of these pujas help to purify and clear different types of obstacles and karmic conditions, the three combined on this day are incredibly powerful.

Why make financial offerings for a Puja?

Many people enjoy watching various Pujas online performed by Lamas believing they are receiving a huge benefit. It is also common in the West for people to ask a lama to pray for them without making any offering or having a personal connection. While as one of all sentient being you are connected to the results of the Puja made for the benefit of all sentient being, the karmic connection is incredibly weak and therefore so is the result. Normally during certain times in one’s life when a Puja are prayers are required to clear various karmic debts, obstacles, or karmically based illness, it is customary to make financial offerings to the Lama for prayers and Pujas. This creates a stronger Karmic connection to the Puja which creates a stronger karmic result.

Speaker

  • Khentrul Rinpoche
    Khentrul Rinpoche
    Non-Sectarian Master of Kalachakra

Khentrul Rinpoché Jamphel Lodrö is the founder and spiritual director of Dzokden. Rinpoche is the author of Unveiling Your Sacred Truth, The Great Middle Way: Clarifying the Jonang View of Other-Emptiness, A Happier Life, and The Hidden Treasure of the Profound Path.

Rinpoche spent the first 20 years of his life herding yak and chanting mantras on the plateaus of Tibet. Inspired by the bodhisattvas, he left his family to study in a variety of monasteries under the guidance of over twenty-five masters in all the Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Due to his non-sectarian approach, he earned himself the title of Rimé (unbiased) Master and was identified as the reincarnation of the famous Kalachakra Master Ngawang Chözin Gyatso. While at the core of his teachings is the recognition that there is great value in the diversity of all spiritual traditions found in this world; he focuses on the Jonang-Shambhala tradition. Kalachakra (wheel of time) teachings contain profound methods to harmonize our external environment with the inner world of body and mind, ultimately bringing about the golden age of peace and harmony (dzokden).
